We Will Grow

A poem I wrote at a recent prayer meeting

Knows all
Gives all
Creates all
Calls all

He cares for everyone
As a daughter
As a son
There's no need for it to get complicated
There is o trick
Or illusion
Like any prize we should be in it to win it

Community working together towards one goal
To know God more
And all individually grow
We can grow
We will grow
Going out to sow
We will grow

One Year Snowboard Movie Review

One Year is a snowboard movie that stands out from the crowd. Not only does it feature some amazing footage and tricks. It also features some great insight into the lives of the riders.
This snowboarding movie joins many of the other globe trotters visiting Argentina, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, California and Colorado. The scenes are captivating in their beauty and the shots are creative. If you enjoy a movie with a lot of back country footage, One Year delivers. With Dave Downing and Janna Weatherby doing some incredible lines. It also satisfies on the park front with Matt Hammer laying down some gnarly tricks. In the half pipe we see Olympic medallist Kelly Clark proving why she is one of the best female snowboarders in the world today.
Everyone in the movie pushes their riding to the limit whilst also letting their fun sides and their enjoyment of the sport shine through. There is a fantastic section of two different Generations riding together featuring Andy Finch riding with Brock Crouch. We also get other great pairings of riders where we get to enjoy their different styles of riding, side by side.
The movie is also very honest in showing the thoughts and feelings of the riders who are very open in sharing their life stories. They are Christians with a passion for God as well as snowboarding. It is fascinating and emotional to see how God has helped and affected them in their lives.
One year has a great balance of insightfulness, snowboard action and fun. After a world tour and dvd sales the Nation Foundation movie company have decided to put the movie online for free. So that everyone can enjoy and gain something from it.

Great Movies To Watch And Recomend To Friends: Soul Surfer

Soul Surfer is a dramatic and faithful retelling of Bethany Hamilton's story. Attacked by a shark at the age of 13 she bounced back and not only returned to surfing but also to competitive surfing. The movie follows how she comes to terms with the events along with looking at her family and friends.
Having read the book of the same name and seen several interviews I knew the movie did a good job of following real life events. Bethany Hamilton spent a lot of time on set and had a lot of input along with her family and her friend Alana Blanchard. One of the sad things about movies based on true stories is large deviations from the real events. I recommend watching interviews after the movie because some things you that seem unrealistic aren't.
The movie was a little cheesy in places but this wasn't over done and indeed the movie was toned down in other areas. Her recovery to go into the water may seem remarkably quick. However Bethany said when she was on the hospital set that she was a lot more upbeat than the movie shows she was in hospital. Of course she did have her struggles and the movie does a good job of showing these difficulties as well. Some small changes are necessary and Bethany and family say they're happy with the movie.
The movie has had some criticism for the faith aspect shown, but faith is central to Bethany Hamilton’s life. It's not making the story simplistic, instead it showing the strength her Christian faith has given her. There’s only a small amount of this in the movie but it's enough to show what inspires Bethany and her family. Don't let this put you off if you're not a Christian as it's not preachy. It's there to give a true account of how Bethany and her family handled the accident and aftermath.
The movie is an emotional ride that you can't help but be inspired by. All the actors give a good performance especially Anna Sophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton and Lorraine Nicholson as Alana Blanchard. Both actors display the difficult emotions and thoughts the characters had. Visually it is also stunning with Bethany Hamilton doing her own surf scenes so that the movie can look authentic.
This is an incredible story which is uplifting and challenges us all in how we face difficult times. It is a story of courage and faith for people of all ages and backgrounds. The surf scenes are incredible and despite the shark attack you will leave the movie wanting to go into the water.

Great Christian Books to Read And Recommend to Non-Christian Friends

I decided to compile a list of some good Christian books, which are also good starters for anyone wanting to learn more about Christianity. I believe all of these have a good Biblical grounding and are accessible to all people academic or not

God on Mute

By Pete Greig
“Tenderly honest”.  “Compassionately honest”. Two phrases described to this book.
Recommended to me during a difficult time in my life I found this a very encouraging and realistic read. Pete Greig is very open about the struggles him and his wife faced as she fell seriously  ill. Pete Greig’s honesty is refreshing in a book that asks questions about human suffering.
It also looks  at our attitudes towards suffering and how difficult it can be for Christians to face it. The book also delves into the reactions of others and how people ever hurt or encouraged his family during a difficult and confusing time. At the end of the book there are some helpful study notes included for small groups .
Hilarious in some moments and sad in others, for anyone going through hardships or feeling that God isn’t talking to them this is a great help.

Taming the Tiger

By Tony Anthony & Angela Little
An exhilarating tile this has been amongst the most exciting books I’ve ever read, even more so because it’s a true story. Tony Anthony’s story  is the testimony of God’s saving Grace in his life. It is also an exciting sometimes tense tale as it details how he was a Kung Fu champion and high level personnel body guard.
A wonderfully open story of God can transform someones life. This is a good title to recommend to anyone feeling like God couldn’t possibly love them because of what they’ve done.

What’s so Amazing about Grace

By Phillip Yancey
Philip Yancey has a beautiful style of writing and gives a great account of God’s grace. How distanced are we from God? How much does God love us?  How much has he done for us?  Are some of the questions he looks at. This helped me to discover more of how awesome God is and how much he cares for me.

Heavenly Man

By Brother Yun
This is an incredible story of a man passionate for God under extreme persecution. Brother Yun tells of his humble origins and how God lead him and protected him to become one of the head church leaders in Communist China.
Filled with stories of God’s miracles and love the book also has a very challenging side. Brother Yun also faced torture and abuse, yet kept praising God and drawing closer to him.
This is a great read for those wanting to devote to God’s calling or struggling in a difficult environments . It shows God’s power and loyalty to us in whatever situations we face.

The Bible

Great throughout! Even the strange parts of the old testament ,if you take your time and ask for revelation about it. For anyone reading it for the first time start with one of the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. You don’t have to start at the beginning and they are the centre of what the whole Bible story is about.

The Bible: Reading The Book of Romans

The book of Romans provides an interesting and fairly simple overview of what Christianity is. The writer Paul originally wrote it for the church in Rome to help them understand the gospel message they had received. Authorship is interesting to consider as it’s Gods word giving to Paul, who was once a persecutor of Christian but is now a follower of Christ. This gives a great authority combined with a human example to the writing.
This book shows the situation of the early church and it is interesting to see the similar challenges faced today. Paul also informs the reader on how to live Christ like lives and how to treat each other. This is challenging to the reader and has certainly helped me explore my faith and the struggles I can face.
As it takes place after the gospels it refers to Jesus Christ and his teachings. Paul also makes frequent references to the Old Testament and how that shows the history of God at work and what it prophesied as the coming of Jesus. Paul also makes references to passages which would be familiar to the readership, to show how Christ’s death and resurrection is the next step of Gods plan.
I find Paul’s writing to be wonderfully honest and frank. Paul states what he knows is right, yet not in a condemning way. It may challenge the reader, but it also shows them hope and brings them a good message, which I certainly find very positive. Paul starts by introducing himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ and says how his proclaiming the good news is fulfilling the promise God made long ago. He then goes into Gods anger and judgement of sin which is consistent with the Old Testament showing it to be the same God.  However as is also consistent with the Old Testament he shows Gods faithfulness and grace which is now available to all Gentiles as well. Romans explains God’s relationship to his people as well as showing his hatred of sin. It explains how people don’t have to be slaves to sin and are free to have a relationship with him, if they choose to.
Through Christ there is no condemnation for any sins, as repentance shows a true turning away from them. I found this encouraging but also recognised my personal difficulties, as I can often condemn myself for doing wrong instead of dealing with it and moving on. It also reminds readers that they aren’t perfect and will do wrong, but that it doesn’t mean we should give up to sinful desires. As God knows us we can still be made clean again, so those sins no longer matter. Paul relates personally and freely talks about his own relation to sin, showing that he doesn’t elevate himself because he’s an apostle. He relies on God rather than his own weak self to continue doing right. This makes it clear to the reader that it’s possible to overcome sin through faith in Jesus. Paul also talks about God’s love and how those who believe in him can’t be separated from it. That’s why it’s good to regularly read the Bible to encourage and remind ourselves so that we can continually live in this.
Romans is also encouraging in  that God made all things to work together for good, for those who love him. It shows to the readers of the time and those today that the importance is of relationship with God who wants relationship with us rather than have us be bound by laws, rituals or religiousness. Paul refers to dying to the laws power as it only binds the living. By rising again in Christ’s forgiveness we are no longer bound by the law which we can not help breaking. This is relevant to me as it shows faith relies on knowing and receiving the goodness of God. This is instead of fearing laws which can make me resent them and tempt me to sin by breaking them, as it’s a hopeless task on my own.

Paul also writes about how salvation is for everyone who believes in God and the one he sent. This is important as many at the time thought it was solely for the Jews, causing many problems and is part of the reason why Jesus wasn’t accepted by all. He uses an example of God speaking to Moses, showing that it was always God’s plan to bring nations back to him. This also is an example of the relationship between the Old and New Testament and why Jesus was the important hinge point. It also makes sense to me how God who created us would want a relationship with us , rather than letting man made ritual, or fear of our sins get in the way.
The biggest challenge of this book for me and I imagine many readers is near the end about how to live. It starts by talking about being a living sacrifice, living holy lives for God. It shows how important God sees us and Paul says it’s the least we can do after what God has done for us. We are part of the body of the church which has Christ as the head. This makes me think about how I relate to others and the book also talks about loving others including our enemies. Paul quotes Proverbs about feeding our enemy which isn't an easy thing to do. It also places importance on the relationship between Christians and not to worry over small things which can cause arguments, Paul’s example is about eating habits. This consideration of others doesn’t mean compromising what God wants but by loving each other and God it will increase people’s faith and be an example to non believers.
The book shows Paul’s love of others as an example of how Christians should treat each other. But most importantly it shows Gods loves for us, from creation to now. Romans shows this and how we can draw close to him. This is important for all readers to remember through the ages to remember.

A History of The Russian Church

Looking at Russia's history and the challenges that churches face there

Russia has played a pivotal role in Eastern Europe and the world. Yet despite close connections with many democratic states, the country’s experience has mostly been of dictatorship and oppression. It has only just begun to experience the kind of freedom we enjoy in the west. A country filled with complexities, yet still many parts have simplicity in standards of living. Determined in progress yet still feeling strongly about tradition and faith. The diversity of the population has allowed many of the cultures older aspects to last in some places, whilst other areas have strived towards development and power. Although regularly facing oppression its people’s passion has helped the nation prevail through extreme events.

Geography and Landscape

Russia stretches across northern Eurasia, through 11 time zones. It varies dramatically from large forested plains, wide mountain ranges such as the Urals, and also artic/sub-artic areas.

Climate

Although often seen as cold and harsh, Russia’s vastness gives it a variety of climates, with many parts being warm and mild.

Major Cities

Moscow (the capital), St Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Nizhny Novgorod.

Borders

Countries in Asia and  Europe including the Ukraine, Norway, Finland, Mongolia and China.

Seas and Oceans

The coastline connects with the Artic and Pacific oceans as well as having important connecting seas such as the Black, Baltic, Caspian, North Sea and Sea of Japan.

History

Russia has suffered a lot of turmoil with war, political upheaval and financial crisis. Its vast, rich land brought cultural diversity as eastern and western tribes settled in the area. It first connected with the Christian Orthodox Church, as the country gained immigrants from the Byzantine Empire. This still continued through the invasion and occupation by the Mongols. With Orthodoxy becoming the official state religion in 988 AD after the Mongols were expelled. The country became more unified under a grand Tsar, firstly with the Riurikovich dynasty, and then the more famous Romanovs. The Tsar was seen as God appointed, doing God’s divine will on earth. Orthodoxy and the state became intertwined and the Church became a political institution.
Despite a Church endorsement of the Tsar and the religiousness of the people, many still sought there own voice, particularly as neighbouring Europe became democratic. The impact of financial trouble as well as famine and war caused dissatisfaction. Uprisings occurred against the Tsarist state in 1917 and a new government was put in place only to be overthrown three months later by the Bolsheviks, who established Communism. Following Marxist teaching Communism saw religion as, ‘the opium of the people’. It viewed the Church as anti revolutionary and many Church buildings were either destroyed or taking over by the Communist party. The Church no longer had a right to publicly promote itself; whilst anti religious material was encouraged. The country survived revolution and was united in facing threats such as that of Nazi Germany 1941. Which resulted in an estimated 27 million deaths.
However many other deaths occurred throughout communism, as a state run by fear, killed anyone it perceived as a threat. After communism fell in 1991 freedom of speech was allowed and for the first time a democratic government was established. Though the troubles Russia has faced still tell financially and socially.

Religion

Although changes in politics has tried to ignore or even destroy religion with its most difficult times being in the Communist period, belief in God has still prevailed and is a mainstay of the Russian people. Today Russia contains a variety of religious groups including Jews, Buddhists, Muslims as well as Christian. It is predominately still Orthodox; however other denominations are growing as is Islam. Since the fall of Communism the Church was again allowed to have a voice in the media and to re-establish or build Churches. Missionaries were welcome again, instead of having to smuggle in bibles. However although the number of people becoming Christians increased rapidly in the early 90s the figures can be misleading. It is believed that many Russians welcomed anything western including its Church. A Church that started in the early 90s registered that there had been thousands of baptisms, yet the congregation was still relatively small.
A country so long deprived of material goods was hungry for them. People searching for a better quality of life found 'prosperity preaching Churches', then got disheartened after these groups did not deliver. In 1997 a law passed by the government on religion, meant that fewer rights were granted to any religious group who didn’t have proof of worshiping within the country for at least 15 years. This was to protect the people from any such groups who may try to take advantage of them.
Unfortunately this complicated the work of those who genuinely want to see lives changed, as they are touched by God. Despite these difficulties there are still missionaries going to Russia and new Churches spring up. As well as short term groups, Christians are recognising a calling to long term commitments. With so much hurt there is a great importance in true teaching and building relationships to help lead people to Christ, so that they too can lead others.

Walking in The Rain

Taking a long walk in the rain
Is it just insane?
What can I hope to gain?
In this long soaking time

Getting drenched
pummeled
By droplets and wind
Cold
I'm surely too old to find fun in this
Whether that's wrong or whether it's right
I shouldn't burden myself with things I can not change

Change
The changing direction of the wind
Unseen but with consequences
Change may be hard but necessary
and  can be fun
Making the sails stand proud
The waves to surf
The kites dance

Then a car flashes pass
Causing extra drenching
Like I should really notice
But I feel a flash of anger
A flash at his flash
The only thing to do is let it go
As I should let go and forgive all the others
The wind
The rain
They are created have a reason
Adapting with changing seasons
Like life
There's a peace that can be found in tumult
When pummeled with rain
Blown this way, then that
I can still take time and listen

The thought of why?

Written  9.6.01 3rd verse added 9.7.01

The days go drifting by
Untill the day
The day we die
Then a thought of why
I didn’t try
To live life to the full

A splash of champagne
Relieves some pain
A nice holiday in the sun
Brings some fun
Until the sight of poverty
Brings home the sense of novelty
Of having so much next to so little
A stark contrast

Having a fast car
May get you far
But takes you to the same junction
Go up or down?
May make you the clown
If you choose the wrong lane

Lots of greenage
And a platinum card
A nice big house
And a jaguar
May disguise the greatest gift of all
Found in a little book and a church hall

Written 03/03/06

The days go drifting by
Until the day
The day we die
What a dismal start to have back then
Not so on such a cheery day
Should I allow myself to be dismayed
Even when I've just spilt doctor pepper on me

it is far better now I  feel free

The thought why I didn't try to live life to the full
Or maybe why I try and try and try too live life to the full
What need have I to feel worried
On hol in a very windy Turky
Though foreign to everyone else?
What a need for difference

A change of pace so valuable
Is hardly a collectible
Not knowing when it will come around
Is part of how a change can astound

Why am I here and not there?
Why why why should I care?
What is a care?
Big and self sustaining
How can I rely on that when I
I'm changing
A constant I need and yet
That which I must remember to forget
On top of me life I must not let
Or in ridiculousness cast my bets
So that nasty moments in times of fret
Don't  in carelessness become a threat

Meaning in a little book and church hall
Oh back then my thoughts were small
The book is big and larger by the day
The world is huge
yet standing, dancing
Walking, talking
Bathing, laughin, spending, saving
Here, there but not everywhere can I be
All is compatible as “I Am” says he

Creation

Written age 16

Starts as nothing
Comes from something
Every twist and curl
Every flea and pearl
Total destruction is never complete
It always leaves pieces
Large and petite
Though counter productive
Who made the produce?

24 hours
From 1 to 12 then back to 1
How and where had it all begun
Did 10 come from 9?
The 12 from 11?
But what about 1 did it come from the 12?
Or had it always there?
 But what started its ticking?

Confusion, chaos, turboilgus mess
Into order as such
Working alongside one another
For mutual existence
Chance?
Fate?
Is it a possibility?

Everything new whilst also old
Creation occurring in every moment
Whilst parts of all are antiquated
How can this be segregated
As this was then
But not quite thus
How can one say it isn’t much?

To be Free

Oh to be free to be free to be free
Free to think, free to see, free to be
To escape or embrace
Which ever I need
Walking, running or standing firm on my feet
Can feel like dancing, prancing
or maybe just moping
so close can these two extremes be
a mind stuck in an atmosphere, in a place, in a head
Expanding, exploding to reach out instead
Not caged in rage or hate
Nor having these whitewashed
In some apathetic fling
I'm not going to get stuck
Focused on what was here yesterday but not today
But on what will be here tomorrow
What is here now
To live to live to live
To give and receive
To read and perceive
Not just to react
Not just be but be me
and be free

I Want to Give It All Up to You

I want to give it all up to you
Let it go
All that I know is not of you

All of the fears
All of the pains
The sorrows
The burdens
Unchained
Cast away
Let this be a new day

Disappointments
I give them all up to you
Hurt feelings
I give them all up to you
 Fears
I give them up to you
Where I’ve feared a lone man
When you have quelled armies, kings
Those who despise me
Don’t really know me
You have restored me
Breathed life into me
Set me where I belong
Where all your creation belongs

I want to give it all up to you
All my dreams, hopes and ideas
The only good ideas are those in line with you
To do me good not harm
The only hope to look to is you
All the material goods, just waste
Taking us into the red
Bring us charges and harsh words

Let us dream
Outside the box
Out of the world
Out of the day to day
I want to give my future up to you

Hope or Death

Born to die
What a lie
Born to suffer
Like your mother and father has
Like your grandfather and grandmother has
No way, no how that don’t make sense
Generations of pain so intense
When it started life was joy
The gift itself did not annoy
But now
The days
Most good
Some bad
At worst the opposite is the fad
What went wrong along the way?
Was it life?
It’s all life
How much hope can come from nothing?
How much more the joy springs out of something
Always present but were not all there
Never fuzzy when we share
What spring sprouts forth hope, joy and peace
How can all get a piece?
From dark to light
Shadow to object
That which is possible to reflect
To all not one
Long happy songs
How long how long?
Till the wrongs gone.
